Fall Gardening Chores
FALL GARDENING CHORES
Since Fall is undoubtedly cooler, it’s the perfect time to get some of your Gardening Chores accomplished! If landscaping the yard has been on your wish list, planting Shrubs, Perennials, Fruit and Shade Trees now enables them to root out faster, resulting in a big growth spurt when the weather warms in the Spring.
~Get started with your Fall Veggie Garden. Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage, and Kale need to be planted as early as possible so they have time to grow large before the cold weather sets in. Garlic, Celery, Lettuce, Swiss Chard, and Spinach can also be planted now from transplants or seeds. While it is still early, try some Carrots and other root crops like Radishes from seed.
~Fall is also the perfect time to plant another type of root crop, Bulbs! Daffodils, Tulips, Hyacinths, Crocus, Anemones, Ranunculus and more are all available now to plant for spring color. Refrigerating some of bulbs may be necessary for best results.
~Speaking of COLOR, Pansies, Violas, Poppies, Snapdragons, Stock and Dianthus can be planted now for a beautiful show from Fall through Winter and Spring. Try some Flowering Cabbage and Kale for a real “WOW” effect!
~Now is the time to divide Perennials, Daylilies, and Iris. Divide the fans with your spade then replant and share with your gardening friends.
~Fertilizing the lawn and established Shade/Fruit Trees, Roses, Woody Ornamentals and Evergreens now is recommended. Using specific fertilizers for specific plants, such as Winterizer for Grass and Azalea Food for Azaleas, will give the best results and deliver needed food throughout the winter to the roots. DO NOT FEED HEAVILY but rather lightly in Fall.
