Hummingbird Feeder Nectar and Suet Recipe
You can make your own hummingbird nectar by using the following recipe.
- 1 cup pure granulated sugar
- 4 cups hot boiling water
Boil more than 4 cups of water on the stove top. Use more than 4 cups to adjust to the loss of water from steam. Carefully measure out four (4) cups of boiling water into a large bowl. Add 1 cup of pure granulated sugar. Mix the pure granulated sugar and water together until all of the sugar is dissolved. Carefully place mixture into the refrigerator to cool, usually overnight. After mixture has cooled it is ready to use. Very carefully, take apart your hummingbird feeder and clean with soap and water making sure your feeder is free from any debris and/or mold. Fill your hummingbird feeder with the prepared food and reassemble. Watch and enjoy the show!
Bird Suet Recipe
During the long months of Winter one bright spot can be your suet feeder. Homemade suet attracts lots of colorful feathered friends!
Here is our own family recipe:
- 4 cups corn meal
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup lard
- 1 cup crunchy peanut butter
Heat lard and peanut butter then add other items and mix together, spread out in a square pan and refrigerate to firm. Cut into squares and store in freezer until needed. I usually double this recipe and add some thistle seed for the finches. The wild birds love it!
